There are many reasons that people decide to get tattoos. Often, the decided-upon inking is a tribute to loved one. Sometimes, tattoos are done for cultural reasons. Samoan culture, for example, has a rich history of tattooing. However, for some others, getting a tattoo is a spur of the moment decision that can be regrettable.

There was a time when the entire concept of a tattoo was to attach a marking on your body that was to be permanent. But with the advent of the incredible process of Laser Tattoo Removal, many of these spur of the moment decisions can be rectified. The thing is, not many people are really aware of how Laser Tattoo Removal works.

I imagine it’s painful, commented one of my friends recently. The funny thing is, she has a tattoo and has gone on ad nauseam about how painful the process of getting the tattoo was. As a teenager, she thought the idea of getting a heart wrapped in thorny rose stems would be the coolest thing in the world.

As a soon-to-be-mom and school teacher ten years removed from her highschool days, she now thinks otherwise. What she doesn’t yet realize is that removing a tattoo is far less painful than getting one to begin with. In my last blog, I pointed out a recently-posted YouTube video that does a great job of explaining how the Medlite Q-Switch Laser effectively breaks down the tattoo ink embedded under the first layer of skin.

Dr. Rebecca Small shows that using the laser causes her patient little to no discomfort. As she uses the laser, she notes that a snapping feel helps her to determine the effectiveness of the laser on the ink. However, the patient doesn’t seem to react. She goes on to paint over the tattoo with the laser showing significant changes in the ink pigmentation. It clearly gets much lighter quickly.

But how can a laser not cause any significant pain? A topical anesthetic is applied to the treated area thirty minutes prior to the treatment, says Dr. Small. She admits that, without it, discomfort is inevitable. And even with the anesthetic cream, she recommends that, following a treatment, ice be applied to the treated area.

The ice will also reduce complications by lessening the chances of any blistering post-procedure although this rarely ever occurs with the Q-Switch Laser she uses. It’s a matter of wavelengths. The varying wavelengths utilized by the lasers often correlate to the colour of the ink used in the tattoos.

The Revlite uses four different wavelengths making it ideal to remove just about any colour tattoo. And the best part? You won’t experience the type of sometimes-excruciating pain that comes with getting a tattoo. In addition, treatments take minutes, compared to the often several-hours it takes to get a tattoo.
