Male Breast Might Be Caused By Soy

By Samuel Peterson

Soy is generally considered to be a natural source of protein and that’s why most vegetarians feast on it. Doesn’t sound like much of a problem, does it? The catch seems to be that the male population is wondering whether it makes them less of a man and more of a woman! Yes, bizarre as it may appear, it’s true. Studies conducted on the protein packed alternative to non vegetarian food have shown that soy contains female hormones which might cause growth of breasts in males!

This revelation has caused all soy eating men to become conscious of their soy intake and even to stop it altogether! Generally, ‘male breast’ is a commonly used expression for the scientific term ‘gynecomastia’ which means lady-like breasts in men. The cure of this male oriented problem lies in surgical removal of fat from around the male nipple to reduce the breast size to normal.

While foods like soy have no connection whatsoever with gynecomastia, research has revealed that soybeans are a very rich source of ‘isoflavones’, a group of molecules. These in turn show minute presence of estrogen, an essentially female hormone. In fact isoflavones have been known to cure the symptoms shown by menopausal women such as hot flushes. Also, estrogen intake is common among transgendered males for breast enhancement.

The fact that soy ingestion can cause growth of male breast hasn’t been completely proved as yet, it hasn’t even been denied. Those who totally disregard this study say that gynecomastia has a lot of causes such as obesity, genetic structure and hormone intake but soy certainly isn’t one of them. Such doctors and medical professionals feel that the presence of estrogen is in very minute amount and doesn’t add up as capable of causing gynecomastia.

The argument also extends to the very root of soy consumption. Many feel that some infants who cannot take in soy in its natural state have it in the form of soy infant formulas. Also, many children right from their infancy might be fed soy milk instead of mother’s milk. Out of such children, the males do not show any breast enlargement of full-fledged gynecomastia as opposed to children fed on normal milk. This should rubbish claims of soy causing an increase in male breasts.

Till now, there has been a singular case registered in the National Institute of Health which pertains to soy and gynecomastia. The person in question developed gynecomastia and tests revealed that this was due to his gulping three quarters of a gallon of soy milk each day! While this incident stands out due to an abnormal amount of soy intake by the man, it is so far the only registered incident.

To cut a long story short, unless you are living entirely on grossly huge quantities of soy each day, you need not live in fear. Gynecomastia and soy seem to have a bleak connection but you don’t necessarily have to deny yourself the protein enriched food. Eat away to your heart’s fill since the average soy intake has been observed to have no effect on male breasts. Now you can eat soy and still be a man!
